History of Museum

The Ellsworth Heritage Foundation was established in 1982, to support preservation of several historic airplanes displayed at Ellsworth Air Force. The Ellsworth Heritage Foundation strived to showcase the unique and legendary history of different airplanes used in combat and that were important parts of various military missions for the United States.

The museum as it currently stands was established outside the front gate of Ellsworth Air Force Base in 1992 as a Field Museum of the US Air Force. Over the years the SD Air & Space Museum has flourished in the community by preserving aviation history, honoring veterans, producing educational opportunities for students, and inspiring innovation for future aviation for generations to come.
